Atomic Cartoons helped kickstart the journeys of our student filmmakers and artists with an exciting day of workshops exploring the world of Hand-Drawn Animation! Students learned about character design, storyboarding, and careers in animation and were inspired by the speakers’ love of cartoons!
The day kicked off with students learning all about character design from 2D Supervisor Maisha Moore. Students applied what they learned in a rapid drawing exercise where they created a new character inspired by the randomly selected words “steampunk” and “crystals.” Nadine Westerbarkey then walked students through storyboarding examples, breaking down the process and explaining how to fully express a story that is connected in a string of panels. With this foundational knowledge of animations, Atomic storyboard artists and directors joined for a panel discussion, offering stories and advice for pursuing a career in animation. The day concluded with students getting the opportunity to share their portfolios with Atomic and receiving feedback and advice on their work!
The day was so meaningful for our students and will help our newest students as they work on their animatic shorts this summer. Thank you, Atomic Cartoons, for your support and partnership!
